The Structure of the Gospel
The text is generally organized into five major parts:The Prologue (1:1-18): Introduces Jesus as the pre-existent "Word" (the Logos) that became flesh. The Book of Signs (1:19-12:50): Highlights seven miraculous miracles or "signs" performed by Jesus, such as turning water into wine and raising Lazarus. The Farewell Discourses (13:1-17:26): Jesus' private teachings to His disciples in the Upper Room before His arrest. The Passion and Death (18:1-19:42): The accounts of Jesus' betrayal, trial, and crucifixion. The Resurrection (20:1-21:25): The appearance of Jesus to His followers and the declaration of the book's purpose.
